Jamal-Dominique Hopkins is the Founder and current Director of J.D. Institute. Dr. Hopkins is an international Bible scholar and expert on the Dead Sea Scrolls wherein he has appeared, lectured and presented research on various related topics throughout America (including at Princeton Theological Seminary, Emory University’s Graduate School of Religion, Oberlin College, and the W.E.B. Du Bois Society at Harvard University), as well as in such countries as Scotland, Ireland, Austria, Italy, England and Slovenia. Hopkins has taught and lectured at various colleges and universities including Ashland Theological Seminary, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Pasadena City College, California Institute of Technology, Messiah College, California State University at Los Angeles, Memphis Theological Seminary, Azusa Pacific University, California State University at San Bernardino and Crichton College. Hopkins has been featured in the media including on 11Alive-WXIA (NBC Atlanta Affiliate) News with Brenda Wood; on Fox Channel 5 - WAGA (Atlanta Affiliate) with Portia Bruner, and on the Atlanta Interfaith Broadcast (AIB Television).
Dr. Hopkins was academically trained in the United Kingdom (England), where he did his Ph.D. work at the University of Manchester. He is the author of several works including “Dead Sea Scrolls: Jerusalem Priesthood in the Scrolls,” in the Encyclopedia for the Historical Jesus (Routledge Press, 2008); “Hebrew Patriarchs in the Book of Jubilees: A Descriptive Analysis as an Interpretative Methodology,” in With Wisdom as a Robe (Sheffield Phoenix Press, 2008); “Ecclesiastes,” in The Africana Bible: Reading Israel’s Scriptures from Africa and the African Diaspora (Fortress Press, 2009); “The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Greco-Roman World: Examining the Essenes’ View of Sacrifice in Relation to the Scrolls” in The Dead Sea Scrolls in Context Proceedings (Brill, 2011); “Levitical Purity in the New Testament Gospel,” in “What Does the Scripture Say?” Studies in the Function of Scripture in the Gospels and the Letters of Paul (T&T Clark, 2012) and “Empowering Women in the Gospel of John: Toward an Afro-Christian Hermeneutic and Methodological Approach,”(forthcoming) in African American Voices: Jesus and the Gospels (Edwin Mellen Press). Hopkins also serves on the board of the National Black Evangelical Association (NBEA) and on the editorial board of the Journal of African American Christian Thought, where his article “Duty or Responsibility? The African American Evangelical’s Identity,” (2009), appears. His writings have also appeared on urbanfaith.com and in the Pasadena/San Gabriel Valley Journal Newspaper.
